Why are my coach batteries not being charged?

By Rachel Ross |

Why are my coach batteries not being charged?

IF you have good voltage from the alternator something downstream is not allowing the batteries to charge, follow all the wires off the alternator. Most RV’S have a battery isolator or solenoid that will allow the coach and house batteries to charge while driving.

What kind of battery charger does coach RV use?

I have checked the 120VAC to 12VDC inverter that I assume is supposed to charge the coach batteries. It produces 13.5 VDC (with no load) and powers all of the 12V components in the RV. The RV uses an Intellitec battery disconnect system. Inside the door are two switches to disconnect the chassis and coach batteries (see photo below).

Where does the power from the coach batteries come from?

Power from the batteries enters through the two copper bars in the center (see red arrows pointing up). The cables labled S and I are from the rocker switches inside the RV that activate the disconnect relays. When activated, the relays connect coach and chassis power to the RV.

Why does my RV converter not charge the batteries?

If your RV converter not charging batteries when plugged into shore power you need to take a close look at the contact posts of your RV batteries. Sometimes a buildup of greenish or white corrosion can get to a point where the batteries can’t receive a charge or receive a minimal charge.

Why are my coach batteries not charging on shore power?

The coach batteries are not being charged when I’m connected to shore power. I’ve verified this by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when on shore power. There is no change in voltage when I connect to shore power.

What is the voltage of a coach battery?

The cables labled S and I are from the rocker switches inside the RV that activate the disconnect relays. When activated, the relays connect coach and chassis power to the RV. The voltage in and out of each relay was 12.3V, the same with and without shore power.

Where do I Disconnect the coach battery in a RV?

The RV uses an Intellitec battery disconnect system. Inside the door are two switches to disconnect the chassis and coach batteries (see photo below). Also below photos of the Intellic disconnect relays inside the power distribution box that’s in the engine compartment.

What to do when a Ford coach battery goes dead?

My gas Ford coach has an aux start switch that really saved my situation when I got a bad battery that frequently went dead. Just make sure the house batteries are well-charged by plugging in the coach to shore power (if they are low and you need to), then hit the aux switch and start the engine.

Can a diesel coach have an emergency battery?

YES, most diesel coaches have a battery boost/battery combine/emergency start switch just like most gas coaches do. They serve to combine the CHASSIS to the HOUSE battery bank. They can be combined to bring the battery with more charge to bear whatever you are trying to start– main engine or generator.

What should I do if my RV battery is not charging?

Most of the time you will need to replace the problematic battery. You will need to replace the batteries with a new one or reconditioned 12-Volt RV batteries. Though if you have the time on your hands, you might be able to find a battery technician who can recondition your batteries for a minimal charge.

Why are the batteries on my RV not charging?

1 Sulfation. When RV house battery is in use, sulfuric acid begins to be deposited on the battery plates, in the form of small crystals. 2 Discharging. It’s common for RV home batteries to self-discharge even when stored, and this is something every owner should have in mind. 3 Overcharging. …

Why is the battery on my ALINEr not charging?

There will be a slight draw on the batteries from the radio presets and engine CPU for the engine battery, and a draw from the LP leak detector so it’s good to isolate those. My battery on my aliner is not charging after I drive with it all connected to my destination. The battery itself was tested and is chargeable.

What causes a car battery to stop charging?

However, this can only remain so if the float charge is maintained. If the charge rate gets too high, the electrolyte in the battery will boil off as the charging continues after which it will no longer charge.

Can a house battery charge a RV battery?

Definitely yes, it charges. Every time your RV is plugged in, your house battery gets charged. Whereas it is just a trickle charge, it may deplete the electrolyte levels of your battery cells.

What causes a car battery to not charge?

A dead battery is a potential cause that may prevent the battery from charging. This can be prevented by charging the batteries, and this can be done using a carbon pile load because it can determine how healthy a battery is, and if it is working properly.

Why does an alternator not charge the batteries on a RV?

Wonder if you are referring to the BATTERY ISOLATOR RELAY (one of the two types of battery isolators used on RV’s) . Allows alternator to charge both battery banks, but separates the battery banks when the engine is off so that the house batteries do not discharge the chassis batteries.

Why is my battery not charging on my camper?

Reason Why Its Not Charging : If your converter charging unit (or the breaker of the converter), is switched off, or if you have several kinds of battery detach solenoid slot in, the batteries won’t be able to get a charge. If playback doesn’t begin shortly, try restarting your device.

What are the battery volts on a coach?

The Chassis battery running is 14.35 The Coach batteries running stay at 12.58 Plugged in not running the Batteries are at 12.58 I checked all fuses and breakers and everything is ok not tripped or blown. I then located the converter and tested the volts coming out and they bounce between 11.2 and 13.5 which didn’t seem right to me?

Where did the batteries for the coach come from?

Of course, it was too late to save our original coach batteries, so on our way south to the Annual Rally just before Labor Day 2005, we stopped in at the Interstate Battery dealer in Portland and “ponyed up” for four new house batteries.

What is the solenoid on a coach battery?

Yesterday I was able to look at the Solenoid (I believe it is a solenoid and not an Isolator) in the battery compartment. It seems there was another “Solenoid” daisy chained to this one and the positive cable that connects to the battery was in the middle.

Why does my coach battery go dead when plugged in?

If you can measure an increase in DC voltage at the battery bank when the coach is plugged in, then the battery charge circuit is at least complete and probably working. If the voltage does not go up when plugged in, look for a blown fuse in the charge circuit in the converter/charger.

How often should I replace my RV battery?

They power kitchen appliances, lights and more when the RV isn’t running. A well-made deep cycle battery will last far longer than a starter battery — up to three or four times as long, in fact — meaning you shouldn’t have to replace one very often.

Can a 12 volt power converter run without a battery?

Lastly, check the batteries a properly working converter should run the entire 12 volt system even without a battery (though it’s not recommended due to the tendency of converters to let transient AC voltage through, the battery acts like a “filter”).

Can a dirty battery impede a power converter?

Dirty batteries can seriously impede the charging circuit and can and will draw voltage directly off the battery. Good luck. We have a 2009 Forest River Salem Travel Trailer that is parked year round at a resort wtih 30 amp service.
