Where is the shower pan located?

The shower pan is a waterproof barrier made of either lead or vinyl that is formed into the shape of a pan. It’s placed under the tile floor of a shower. The purpose of the pan is to catch any water that may seep through the tile and grout and direct it to the drain.

How do I know what surround my shower is?

Knock or press on the outside wall of the tub. Some tub materials, like acrylic and fiberglass, are thin and flexible. If you knock on the side of the tub and the material has a little give, your tub is likely fiberglass or acrylic.

Does every shower need a shower pan?

You always need a shower base, but a shower pan isn’t always necessary. Without the subfloor for your shower, there’s no way to install a shower pan. It’s meant to support the pan. You also can’t install a tile floor without having a subfloor first.

How often do shower pans need to be replaced?

Under normal conditions, it is safe to say an acrylic shower pan will lasts several years at the minimum and possibly up to 10 years or more. Acrylic is very durable, and it is completely corrosion resistant.

How do you install a shower surround over tile?

Apply strong adhesive to the tile and the wall. Leave at least 1/4 inch edge around the installation area. Once the adhesive is in place, install the shower surround. Make sure that the holes line up with the faucet, bars, and shower head prior to pressing down on the surround.

What should I do if my shower pan is moving?

Identifying the cause behind the moving shower pan is nearly as important as the fix itself. Once you know the cause, you may be able to make minor repairs that stabilize the pan or protect the delicate drain fittings. Few prefabricated shower pans will feel as rock-solid as a tiled shower base.

Where are the weep holes in my shower?

There is a spot about 3/4″ long that dips down from the plane of the edge and back up. It’s a dip in the edge of the tub or shower basin. When equipped with these built-in weep holes – DO NOT FILL THEM WITH CAULK!
