What happens when your GREY water tank is full?

By John Kim |

What happens when your GREY water tank is full?

If your grey tank is full, water will stop draining from the sink and/or shower pan and they will continue to fill with water. If your black tank is full, the same thing happens except it is much nastier.

What’s the difference between a GREY tank and a galley tank?

If your RV has three handles to dump your wastewater, then your RV has a separate galley waste water tank. If you have a small Class B or self-build camper van, or a pop-up camper, you may not have a shower at all. In that case, all of your gray water will be “galley gray water”.

Why is my grey water tank not draining?

When in a campground for several weeks I usually leave the gray tank drain valve open. Recently I noticed that my tank does not seem to be draining. I stuck a hose up past the valve so I know it is at least partially open and we have always been very careful about food particles we allow to go into the tank.

Is the galley tank just from the kitchen sink?

Im guessing the galley tank is just from the kitchen sink. Yes? The bathroom sink and shower, I am fairly sure, drain into the grey water tank. And of course, the obvious drain into the black.

How often do you empty the galley tank?

Since we have a washer, that is easy since one load and one day of dish washing and showers will get us to a half full grey tank. We then dump black, a bit of black tank flushing and then dump the grey tank. When sitting still that is about every 10 days with our small, 35 gallon, black tank.

Is it good to keep grey tank Open?

Now, having said all of that, there are those that say it does things good to NOT keep the grey tank open, because with water in the tank, should any food wash into the tank, it has a better chance of being liquified for easier discharge. It may also be helpful to have water in the tank to help the tank level indicators.
