What happens to a broken out Chev 454?
What happens to a broken out Chev 454?
Breakage failure is not the common failure mode of worn out engines. They die a slow death of losing power, using oil, smoking and being hard to start. If it doesn’t smoke and has good power it probably has another 60K miles in it. I have personal experience with other truck big blocks that tell the same story.
Is the 454 engine a good RV engine?
The 454 is a great engine. Our 1989 Southwind (454 engine, 32′) made the trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon just fine last year and has been very reliable for the last 3 years we’ve owned it. We love the coach and don’t think we need to upgrade anytime soon.

Is the GM 454 C.I.A good engine?
The GM 454 (7.4) is a great engine. The basic engine is a real workhorse. The following is just my opinion. I feel that any coach up to 34′ is just about the max for a gas engine. 37′ might be a little too much for the 454. That being said, if you drive it right it should do the job for you. You might want to take I-80 across Nebraska and Wyoming.
What kind of fuel delivery system does a 454 engine use?
This is an aspirated fuel delivery system with the addition of a mixture control system controlled by the ECM. It is not even close to the ECM used today. This fuel delivery system uses a mechanical fuel pump with the addition of an inline lift pump between this pump and gas tank on some systems to help prevent vapor-lock.
