What does a red light on a furnace mean?

What does a red light on a furnace mean? If your oil furnace isn’t coming on, you may see a red light illuminated on the burner unit. When lit, this red light, also called a lockout light, indicates that a safety mechanism on your furnace has caused a shutdown because it has detected a problem or recognized a fault.

How can I tell if my furnace igniter switch is working?

Look under your furnace to see if it’s lit. If not, you can use a long match to try and carefully light it again. If that does not work then you have a bigger problem. With an electronic furnace igniter switch, your furnace is safer and does not use the small amount of gas that a furnace with a pilot light does.

The good news is that these are all simple furnace problems to fix, and the latter of the two is certainly the more common.

Over-voltage, like in-rush and other voltage spikes, creates constant overheating. Under-voltage can prevent the contacts of a relay from staying closed securely. And it’s not just the voltage that’s damaging these parts. It’s also the current being carried with that voltage which wears out switches prematurely.
