How to set ignition with a timing light?

In this video we look at how to set timing on an outboard motor using a timing light. We’ll look at using timing marks, top dead center and the light to get good ignition timing at idle. MarineEngine.com proudly sponsors the Dangar Marine YouTube Channel.

What happens when the Check Engine light does not turn off?

Therefore, if it was the correct repair, the check engine light will turn off on its own while driving the vehicle through its drive cycle and signals to the driver that the vehicle is ready to be tested. If the check engine light does not turn off, then additional repair(s) may be required.

How can you tell if your ignition system is weak?

If you remove the secondary lead from an oil-filled coil and it is wet, the coil needs to be replaced. The proper method to check for spark is with a spark tester. It resembles a spark plug but has a sunken center electrode that simulates a load on the coil. Holding the plug wire and seeing if a spark jumps to ground is inconclusive.

How does an ignition system work when there is no distributor?

When an engine has no distributor, it will use a sensor on the crankshaft to identify each firing event; the sensor also recognizes the number-one cylinder. The control unit is programmed with the correct firing order.

When does the ignition warning light come on?

While it was written particularlly for the Morgans, the general theory is valid for most cars. (ED: The ignition light is used to tell when a generator (or alternator) is charging the battery. When the light is on, it means that you are running off the battery or discharging the battery.

Why do I have a problem with my ignition light?

There are several possible causes. On a dynamo it may be damaged brushes , a worn commutator or possibly faulty internal windings. With an alternator the problem may be caused by a faulty rectifier, which is usually situated inside the alternator unit.

Therefore, if it was the correct repair, the check engine light will turn off on its own while driving the vehicle through its drive cycle and signals to the driver that the vehicle is ready to be tested. If the check engine light does not turn off, then additional repair(s) may be required.

Why does my ignition light flicker at low speeds?

But the light does behave in slightly different ways depending on the type of generator fitted to your car. If your car is equipped with a dynamo it is normal for the light to flicker at idling speeds as this type of generator produces little or no current at low engine speeds. The light should extinguish when the engine speed is raised.
