How does a fifth wheel landing gear work?

Electric 5th wheel landing gear is powered by an electric motor. This motor drives a reduction gearbox (usually a 3:1 ratio). The reduction box is attached to the main driveshaft that drives both legs. The driveshaft turns a bevel gear in each leg that in turn drives a bevel gear attached to a worm gear.

How do fifth wheel jacks work?

The outer tube of the landing gear is attached to the fifth wheel frame via some frame clamps. The clamps themselves are usually welded to the trailer frame, and bolted clamps hold the outer jack tube in place. The inner tube of the jack will extend and retract, raising and lowering the front of the fifth wheel.

After the bolts were removed the motor comes loose and can be moved out of the way. Next step is to undo the cross shaft. This is a square shaft that transfers the torque and rotation from the driver side landing leg over to the passenger side landing leg. It is held in place by a 3/16th Allen key socket and a regular nut on the other side.

On my Keystone Cougar fifth wheel, the bolts needed a 3/8th socket or flat headed screwdriver to remove. The top back bolt was in a tough spot so using a 3/8th socket and a small extension was the best bet. After the bolts were removed the motor comes loose and can be moved out of the way.
