How do you wire a thermostat for AC?

Here’s how to wire a thermostat using the color code and, FYI, each terminal’s purpose.

  1. Attach the red wire to the R terminal (Call for heating and/or cooling).
  2. Attach the green wire to the G terminal (Fan).
  3. Attach the white wire to the W terminal (Heat).
  4. Attach the yellow wire to the Y terminal (AC).

Do all digital thermostats have AC wire?

Many conventional, non-connected thermostats don’t need a “c-wire” to function. But today, most Wi-Fi thermostats have new features such as Wi-Fi radios and LED color screens that require the unit be powered at all times. Thermostats can get this constant power through a common wire or “c-wire.”

How do you connect a C wire to a thermostat?

If you have a spare, unconnected, wire going to your existing thermostat, this can be used as a ‘C’ wire. Simply connect it to the ‘C’ terminal on your new thermostat back plate. Then at your heating / cooling control panel connect the same color wire that you connected to the C terminal in your thermostat to the C terminal in the control panel.

How does a smart thermostat connect to a HVAC control board?

Connect the yellow wire from the Venstar device to the Y terminal on the HVAC control board. Connect the green wire from the Venstar device to the G terminal on the HVAC control board. Put the access panel back on the furnace. Turn the power for the furnace and thermostat back on at the circuit breaker.

Where is the green wire on the thermostat?

Connect the green wire from the Diode ‘Y’ to the G terminal on the thermostat. Connect the yellow wire from the Diode ‘Y’ to the Y terminal on the thermostat. Put the thermostat face plate back on. Remove the access panel from the furnace and locate the thermostat wires and terminals.

What are the colors of the C thermostat wire?

These are the most common colors and the labels used for thermostat wires: 1 Blue or Black – C – The common wire 2 Red – R – 24 VAC power from the transformer in your furnace 3 Red – Rc – 24 VAC provides power to Cooling 4 Red – Rh – 24 VAC provides power to Heating 5 Green – G – Fan

What’s the difference between a C wire and a smart thermostat?

Today smart thermostats connects to WiFi network, have back-lit display and several sensors. They use more power than old thermostats and need to have their own power supply. Thermostat C-Wire is that extra cable providing extra power to the smart thermostat. This wire also known as a common wire.
